Broward County Vice Mayor Sue Gunzburger was first
elected to the County Commission in 1992 by a landslide
margin, running on a promise to empower the neighborhoods,
protect the environment, and clean-up county government.
She was easily re-elected in 1994. The Sun-Sentinel
wrote in 2001 that Sue is "a real reformer,"
explaining that she is "out there fighting every
week, demanding that the county be more accountable.
[She] wants insiders to have less influence and the
people to have more." In 1998, 2002 and 2006, Sue
was re-elected without opposition.
Before her election to the County Commission, Sue served
as a Hollywood City Commissioner for ten years (1982-1992).
Prior to entering politics, she worked as a public school
classroom teacher, a small businesswoman, and a clinical
marriage & family counselor.
Sue and her late husband Gerry -- a small businessman,
chemist, and childhood Holocaust survivor -- moved their
young family to Hollywood in 1968. Sue and Gerry were
married for 49 years, until Gerry's death in 2009. Sue
is the proud mother of three grown children (Ron, Cindy
and Judy) and grandmother to three grandchildren (Emily
- 14, Joshua - 12, and Jacob - 10).
Born in Buffalo, New York, Sue was raised in Atlantic
City, New Jersey, and Detroit, Michigan. She worked
her way through college and graduated at age 19 from
Wayne State University with a B.S. in Education. In
the early 1970s, Sue went back to school and earned
her Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from Barry
University.
A dedicated community activist, Sue's current civic
involvement includes Children's Services Council, Homeless
Initiative Partnership Advisory Board, South Florida
Regional Planning Council, Florida Association of Counties
Board of Directors, Broward County Cultural Council,
Funding Arts Broward (FAB) Founding and Current Member,
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and National Council
of Jewish Women. She has also served on the Broward
County Planning Council, Broward Alliance, Broward County
Workforce Development Board, Tri-County Commuter Rail
Authority (Tri-Rail), Broward Water Advisory Board,
and
the Liberia Economic & Social Development Association.
Sue also served as a Delegate to the White House Conference
on Families in 1980, and to the 1996 Democratic National
Convention.
Sue served as Chair of the County Commission for 1994-1995
and 1999-2000. She also served as Vice Chair for 1993-1994
and 1998-1999. As Chair, she also automatically served
as one of the three members of the Broward County Canvassing
Board. In that capacity, Sue was actively involved in
the 2000 Presidential election recount that brought
national attention to our community. She was selected
as Broward County Vice Mayor for the 2009-2010 term,
and is expected to become County Mayor in 2010-2011.
Sue has won many awards over the years for her work
